KAAR Mission Statement

Life Line Screening Test

The Community Involvement Committee has agreed to hold a Life Line Screening day in the KAAR Training Room on June 12th.  The ultrasound screenings are preventative in nature and test for stroke caused by carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and other vascular diseases.

Since cardiovascular disease is the Number One Killer in the US of both men and women, this test is an important opportunity for our members at an affordable cost. Most insurance companies will not pay for these tests unless someone has symptoms of cardiovascular disease so physicians frequently do not order them.  The problem is that 50%of stroke victims had no prior symptoms!

Please feel free to talk to your physician about this opportunity.  Go to our website and click on the Events tab to read the flyer that has been uploaded there for you to share with your doctor.  The cost is also on this flyer.

Appointments are necessary, so once you have looked at the information, call 1-800-679-5192 to schedule your time that day.  Do not call KAAR as the Life Line personnel are making all of the appointments which helps maintain your confidentiality.

We care about you, so take the time to care for yourself!

Career Day with Knox County Schools

The Knox County School System has announced that it will be holding Career Day again this year with summer internships to be held on May 28 and May 29.  Eighth grade students would spend these two days with you from 9:30-2:30 each day and learn what the real estate business is all about by “shadowing” you.

If you are interested in participating, please call Scott Bacon at Knox County Schools – 865-594-1909.

311 – Knoxville City/County Info

Did you know that Mayor Haslam has put together a one-stop shop call center for information about Knoxville City and County?  You can simply dial 311 and ask to be connected to whomever about an issue or opportunity, and they will immediately connect you to the appropriate person.  They don’t give you an extension or a name and expect YOU to dial; they dial it for you!

The Mayor has asked us to help get this information out to as many people as we can, so we are putting this in our newsletter and hope you will share it with your customers, clients, friends and family!

Try it! The Mayor is anxious to hear how you succeed!

Barney Thompson Scholarship Fund

Partners in Education

Did you know?  Barney Thompson served as the Treasurer of the Partners in Education Advisory Board for over 15 years. During his time as an Advisory Board member, he served as an important link between the two areas where he had invested much of his professional life … education and real estate.

Barney was the key factor in the Knoxville Area Association of REAL TORS® becoming a sponsor of the Partners in Education program in Knox County.  For nearly twenty years, the KAAR has been the primary sponsor of Partners in Education county-wide events. His leadership in this area has allowed Knox County Schools partnership program to grow and continue to meet the needs of the students of Knox County.  As a former teacher and coach at South High School, Barney Thompson impacted the lives of students in his classroom and on his teams. Through his investment of time and resources in the Partners in Education program, his impact on current and future students will be felt for years to come.  The Knox County Schools Partners in Education Advisory Board has announced the formation of the Barney Thompson Scholarship Fund.   The initial scholarships will be awarded in the spring of 2009.

We have established the first activity to generate funding for the scholarships. The annual School Coupons Campaign is one of the many partnership programs under the Partners in Education umbrella. The school district has a quantity of coupon books remaining from last fall that are good through August 2008. The coupon books contain thousands of dollars in discounts at over 200 area merchants, and would serve as a great gift to provide customers as they close on new homes. New residents to our community can learn about area shopping and dining options through use of the book, while new and present residents can always use the Home Depot discount on projects in their new home!

The School Coupon Books are available to REAL TORS at the usual $10 price. However, $5 from each $10 book sold will go to the Barney Thompson Scholarship Fund for the 2009 awards. This will allow the Knox County School System to recoup their costs, while also launching this effort to honor Barney's work in the community.

If you would like to purchase 10 or less books, you can order them by phone or mail.

Many of you have had the pleasure of hearing Brian Smith or Todd Sholar teach at TAR.  Both are incredible resources of legal advice and know our state real estate law as well as any attorney can.

I subscribe to their weekly email newsletter, and have permission to print topics from that newsletter.  Below is the posting from last week.

Real Estate Legal Tip of the Week

Tip #307

MANAGING BROKER'S SERIES - BUSINESS LOCATIONS

Section 62-13-309 of the Brokers' Act requires each real estate office to have a real estate firm license, a principal broker, and a "fixed location"

for affiliate brokers.  Branch locations must meet this requirement as well.

This Section of the Brokers' Act further requires that the licenses of the principal broker and each affiliate broker be prominently displayed in the main office.

Should a real estate office change locations, all licensees registered at that office must notify TREC in writing of the change of business address and pay any applicable fees within 10 days of changing locations.
